The goal is to create a translation of an excerpt on the status of Hong Kong’s International Financial Center from 2013 Hong Kong Monetary Authority Annual report using the computer-assisted translation tool Memsource. To be more specific, a translation memory will be built first based on the bilingual 2012 Annual Report of Hong Kong Monetary Authority where the alignment function of Memsource will be tested, followed by the creation of a term base for this project. Translation, editing and proofreading will be performed successively. After the deliverable translation is generated, Memsource’s pros and cons like the accuracy and feasibility of translation will be examined, together with a review of the cooperation among group members.

Required resources
This project requires a project manager, who is in charge of overseeing the whole project, coordinating between translators and keeping the overall project on track. Due to the high density and complexity of the source text, three translators are also required for the successful completion of this project. In addition, at least one editor is needed to ensure that the translation is correct, consistent and coherent. Furthermore, a final proofreader is also required to make final adjustments and polish the work.
- Cost
Hypothetically, a project as the sophistication as this will be paid. The project manager will be paid on an hourly basis; fees to the translators will be calculated according to word count; editors and proofreaders will also be paid hourly. Thus, under the scenario, the probable cost for the overall completion of the project would be approximately in the hundreds.
- Time
The overall amount of time, including project design, preparation, translation, editing, proofreading and final critique as well as assessment is estimated to span 24 days.
- Tools
Tools that will be needed in this project include Memsource, Excel, Word, Dropbox, Google doc, Google Translate, and txt. Among these, Word will be used in the initial extraction, format adjustment of source texts and translation memory set-up. Excel and txt will be used for the purpose of collecting terminologies and glossaries. Memsource, Google Translate will be used for translation. Dropbox, Google doc will be to facilitate group members to share and edit files.
Potential Risks and Mitigation Solutions
The biggest potential risk will be to maintain consistency and correctness of the translation, due to the difference of memory and source text. Possible solutions to this problem would be to involve translators and proofreaders to enhance the qualities of translation.
Additionally, terminologies and source text mismatch will be a barrier in the smooth and quick translation. This requires the setting up of an extensive word base and glossaries prior to the project. Other minor setbacks will be the possible technical difficulties in the process of CAT, which group members bring in outside help or search for solutions online.
Process
In order to put everything into practice, this project will first have to decide on the source text to translate. In this case, the 2013 annual report of HK Monetary Authority is chosen because of the professionalism, clarity, and general consistency of government documents. Next, it is very important to find relative topics for reference in order to prepare a solid translation memory. This project traced back to the 2012 annual report for this use. It will use the alignment function in Memsource to build a translation memory with the topic of Hong Kong as an international financial center. Then the project will make sure that each document is saved in proper format for later translation, and upload them to Memsource respectively.
During the translation itself, this project will rely on the browser-based Memsource to carry out the work. After the source text and the translation memory are placed properly, the translation tool will then segment the source text and start the pre-translation. This phase is of particular importance as it offers the translator with a potentially very helpful reference to get the gist of the source text. In the case of government documents especially, there is likely to be a high percentage match, and thus greatly facilitates the translator’s work. Based on the pre-translation, this project will then proceed into the human translation phase using a variety of resources including dictionaries and Wikipedia databases.
After the translation is done, this project will go into the finalization phase, which includes editing and proofreading.
