Individual Project Proposal

The main goal of this project is to provide long-term translation technology and terminology management suggestions to E2E while exploring the pros and cons of Wordfast Anywhere as compared to Trados and MemoQ. E2E is a start-up company founded by Teryn Wolfe, a 2014 MIIS IEP graduate. It is founded in September 2014 and is based in Medellin, Colombia. The company designs pro bono case studies for emerging (E) projects and customers, then uploads them to the E2E online platform where anyone can browse them. From the website, the Established (E) customers can browse the case studies presented and look for projects they would like to support—(therefore E2E). E2E offers several levels of services to Established customers, including data provision, project design, and full project management. Due to E2E’s bilingual operation (English-Spanish) and its web-based nature, there is an ongoing demand for translation of every document. In addition, since the company’s key to success lies in delivering an effective communication between the parties involved, translation is undoubtedly an essential part throughout its workflow. As E2E is still under establishment and everything is just getting started, this project will aim at providing contributive suggestions through individual translation works. Future translation topics will include but not limited to case studies, web content, social media, employee manuals, contracts and business strategies etc.

This project will be carried out in three stages. First, Wordfast Anywhere will be applied as the main CAT tool to perform Spanish-English translation. During this process, glossaries and translation memory will also be established and maintained constantly. Secondly, through practice, the translator will be able to identify the advantages of Wordfast as well as its shortcomings in the light of the company’s needs and conditions. And thirdly, the translator will also carry out research work about Trados and MemoQ to find which specific aspects or functions of these two more sophisticated CAT tools better apply to general corporate needs. At the end of this project, the translator is expected to suggest 1) whether E2E needs to invest in any CAT tools based on its future development plan, and 2) how could the company ensure ongoing high-quality translation maintenance.

By implementing the project, the translator is believed to gain a solid understanding of Wordfast Anywhere, including its benefits as well as limitations. At the same time, through research work the translator will also accumulate considerable knowledge about Trados and MemoQ and their values in the context of corporate usage, so that a sound foundation for future study will be laid.
